Walking Westings Meadow

These images are part of an ongoing series capturing walks on the historic site of an ancient flood meadow. Each image is a digital collage of photographs taken on a single walk, sometimes with hand-drawn elements too. They capture the essence of the place on that day and the details that caught my eye.

For hundreds of years Westings Meadow was inter-commonable land, shared by the surrounding villages. It was a very valuable resource for wildlife and people, managed by an intricate system of agreements and protections. In the early 1800s the Enclosures Act changed that, making the land entirely private. The name seems to have fallen out of use around that time.

Nowadays, with the purchase of Christ's College Nature reserve by Langdyke Countryside Trust in 2024, part of Westings Meadow is once again owned and managed by the local community. There are footpaths across the land once known as Westings Meadow too... though few people know of its name and historic importance.
